If you've been waiting for something truly special to open up for families in our area, your wait is almost over. This week, kidSTREAM Children's Museum officially opens its doors in Camarillo — and my family got a sneak peek at the soft opening. Spoiler: it was even better than I hoped.

Let's Talk About the Exhibits

First up — the crafting area. This isn't your average arts-and-crafts table. We're talking every kind of craft supply and STEAM tool you could imagine, including an impressive cardboard table saw for heavy-duty cutting. Kids can freestyle create or get help from the staff, who are genuinely enthusiastic about guiding little makers through their projects. Best of all? The kids get to take everything home.

If your family has ever loved the interactive air pressure exhibit at MOXI in Santa Barbara, you'll be excited to know that kidSTREAM has their own version. And the LEGO area — complete with a giant LEGO wall — is the kind of spot where you'll have to physically drag your kids away.

The Outdoor Space is a Total Gem (Insider Tip: Don't Underestimate It)

One of my favorite things about kidSTREAM is that most of the Phase 1 exhibits are actually outdoors, and the space is spacious. There are so many little nooks and crannies to discover, and the thoughtful details really add up:

• A sweet soft-play area perfect for the littlest ones
• Shaded seating with turf couches and umbrellas (those turf couches are surprisingly comfortable — I'm already planning coffee catch-ups with friends while the kids play)
• A giant sand pit for dinosaur excavating
• An oversized outdoor play kitchen
• An outdoor amphitheater where kids can put on their own performances
• And a cardboard sliding hill — similar to the beloved one at Libbey Park in Ojai, but right here in our backyard! 🎉 Insider tip: Don't let your kids go down the hill standing up - WIPEOUT!

I already know we are going to spend entire summer afternoons watching the kids go up and down that sliding hill on repeat.

A Note on Age Range

One of the questions I keep getting asked: what age is this museum best for?  With a 14-year-old and a 7-year-old, I had a great opportunity to experience it through both lenses. My honest take: kidSTREAM is best suited for kids 8 and under. My teenager came along and had fun playing with his little sister, but most of the exhibits are really designed with younger kids in mind.

The Staff, the Space & a Few Extra Perks

The team is still in that exciting early phase of sharing something they've been building for months — and their enthusiasm is contagious. Everyone we met was warm, encouraging, and genuinely engaged with the kids. "It was really fun. I really liked the greenhouse and the LEGO wall." — Georgia, age 7

When I asked her more, my daughter said she feels like there are so many different activities that we could come back over and over and there would always be something new to do. That pretty much sums it up perfectly.

Our Community Has Been Waiting for This

The kidSTREAM mission has been a long and hard-fought journey, and our community is beyond ready. This is just Phase 1 — more indoor exhibits, programs, field trips, and outreach initiatives are on the way. I am so thrilled they are finally open and can't wait for all of us to spend this summer exploring and playing together.
